Notice: BL Scanlations Policy

It had come to my attention that my scanlation of Carnivorous Animal's Table Manners has been updated at Manga-Updates despite my explicit instruction not to do so. I am deeply ashamed of how unthoughtful each and every single one of you are. Quite frankly, I am migrating back to Livejournal and putting passwords on all my releases, both mediafire link and actual file, adding watermarks and making membership a lengthy, arduous and question-filled task that may or may not involve calling me wonderful and downright untrue things on a regular basis. Just kidding. While, yes, I am a little disappointed that it was updated without consent despite my fair explanations, (Carnivorous was updated at places like Kisha Club anyway, get on that guys), tbh I changed my mind and was going to update MU myself and put this post up regardless.

From now on, my BL releases have the same policies as my other non-BL releases - anything goes. Link back or re-upload on your blog, forum, MT, MU, go ahead and tell your mum and your neighbour if they're into it too. I'll deal with publishers if/when time comes. Maybe don't tell your neighbour if they're a publisher.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Wow, you sounded kind of.. hmm.. bad-ass with all the "I'll deal with publishers if/when time comes". Seriously, I like your style

  2. I am sorry someone carelessly broke your rules. That is very frustrating. Still, I would be most devastated if you did something drastic like leave abandon me. Please don't stop your wonderful scanlations. I love them so much. Your work is really great. And I thank you for all the hardships you endure, the long hours you sacrifice, and for your generosity in sharing such splendid pieces of art with the world that would otherwise never be known to us. Thank you. Hang in there and I'm behind you on this.

  4. my god, you really had me going there for a second considering what publishers the title is from and how careless the person updating the MU page was. i'd die if you became like bangaqua or something with 4 obscure passwords hidden for their super secret IRC channel that us mere mortals can't handle for their super secret libre shuppan releases.

if needed, send a message to lambchopsil - site admin - http://www.mangaupdates.com/members.html?id=4395 and have it removed if you really don't want it up there. they are pretty decent about monitoring updates (at least, from what i heard.. D:)

  5. i'm sorry people didn't follow your rules. i only found this place because of the recent release but wanted to say thank you for your efforts :)

  6. It´s a real shame that people break rules this easily, it´s like an epidemy in the last few months.

Thabk you for picking up this series (what ever happened to terrible_trio???)

    ReplyDelete
  7. thank you for picking up this series,
i was only qurying about this manga a few weeks ago!
it is a pity that some people out there want to ignore your requests

  8. I was shocked reading your message. I was pretty sure this was gonna be a "tighten your belts and keep these scans in the closet, they are on a need to know basis!" type post but instead you were like, "free for all, come and get it!" I gotta say I'm loving your distro policy. I remember not too long ago when most other scanlation groups were into free-love and sharing. I miss that, thanx for sort of bringing it back.

thank you so much for everything, and *huuuuugs*

  10. damn you scared me there for a sec :) Although I do have your blog bookmarked so I come by once in a while to check up on new releases so I don't count on baka updates much ^^ Glad you're not caving in<3 Thanks for the hardwork! I saw you posted chapter 3 of TV .. thanks for starting a new BL series!

  11. Well, I respect your decision either way... Though I must admit I do appreciate not having to go thru anymore hoops to download (sometimes it seems like there's more time spent getting access to manga then reading it).

  12. =( I'm sorry people made you mad *hugglz*

...And I'm really sorry to be soo special about this, but even though you said ok to BakaUpdates, do you want me to stop announcing your relaeses?

Thank You for your hard work!

    Luv,
    GiggLz.

  13. @Anonymous Haha! Thank you, I've never been called badass before so I'm quite pleased.

  14. @olinatasha Thank you for your concern, mademoiselle; I can feel your worry and appreciation pouring out from every pixel of every letter you have typed. Please do not worry yourself as I am sure I will not, as some call it, "ragequit". And my only sacrifice is losing time reading about more men of the gay persuasion, which I have had plenty of already.

  15. @Anonymous I'm sure the updater only had good intentions, so I'm not too fussed. And trust me, I myself am victim to the super secretness of BA so I am definitely not going that route.

As I mentioned before, I was going to update Carnivorous myself, but the updater beat me to the punch, goshdarnit. But thanks!

  16. @jennyb975 And that ppl like you get to find and read my scans is probably what's most important, so don't sweat it. Thanks!

  17. @Anonymous Well this is the *~internet~*, so I think the lockdown culture of BL scanlation right now is a big factor of that epidemic. I think it's only human behaviour that there will be a 'valiant rebel' where there are 'rules' (of which the BL world has many).

I have no idea what happened to TT ;__; I miss them a lot.

  18. @yvomol78 It is a pity but no hard feelings. Thanks for reading~

  19. @jas And everything I said, but maybe a little less fruity. Huggin' you back!

  20. @lexxielyn Haha, yes, I wanted type up a tirade like what I think BL fans have seen a lot of, hope it didn't scare you ;) Tbh after thinking and reading about and experiencing this bl lockdown culture that is in vogue right now, I'm pretty sure I don't need any of it. While at first I wanted to keep my bl scans on the low-down (but I am google-friendly), I realised there wasn't really a point when half your audience don't even know it's available, or can't even dl it. Bringin' the free-loving back.

  23. @GiggLz Don't worry, I'm not mad! :)

Keep announcing my releases, I think it's super useful for you to do it.

    Thank you!

  24. haha you got me there for a bit.

Thank you for being a reasonable, pleasant person.

  25. You got me there…

Hm, fast to upload other’s work but not fast to work on it, eh?
Kusama’s mangas were laying there abandoned for quite some time. Nobody spare a glance until you decide to work on it. But sharing is light speed as usual *snort*
    Same old, same old… :(

    Kusama is ♥!
I’m VERY grateful you took it and I do hope you add some more of her work in future.
… and any other BL title you decide to work on! *word fujoshi echoing in the back*
    Thank YOU!

Thank you so very much for continuing this wonderful story. I love it so much!

I'm sorry that there are so many idiots that can't follow rules. AAARRRRGGGHHH!! It's so frustrating. Thank you for continuing despite the problems. Personally, I won't post it anywhere.

  27. @Lacy

The people here scolding the updaters for not following rules and stuff. Reminds me exactly of the LJ/forum panicked circlejerk to placate the scanlators so that they won't drop a work that i'm used to seeing ahaha. And that disgusting closed culture - Together with the '2 passwords for a file, i'll take down the links in 3 days, don't update it ANYWHERE or the entire group will be CUT, the journal will be PURGED'. if they don't want to share it with anyone i have no idea why they'd scanlate :/. maybe out of the need for attention or spite. Which should not be the spirit of scanlations.

they'd might as well make a banner that says "Learn Japanese if you want to read it so much". Which i'm kinda doing but it's hard with full time school/work for most people haha .,,.

I'm of the old free scanlations and sharing a story with people to read crowd. guess that culture's kind of making a comeback with the new scanlators like you and the old guards who have been keeping the DLs open to anyone, new or old, and dropping it when the work is licensed.

i won't have bought all the english and japanese manga/anime i own without scanlations or fansubbers.

    sorry if i offended you anywhere along that long spiel ;;

  29. @Anonymous Thanks for reading, hopefully I can release more soon.

It is frustrating, but I myself realise it was a bit silly to try and police something that should be shared. Thank you for caring :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Anonymous In my readers' credit, it actually took some time before it was updated! So I'm quite proud of people from places like Kisha and yuuri21 who were so considerate. Well, from now on I'll be updating, so nothing to worry about anymore :)

I looove Kusama! Her art and story telling is gorgeous. I do want to work on Yumemiru as there's only a couple chapters left, but not a lot of her other work have public scans.

    Thank you~

  31. @Anonymous Haha! Aww yeah.

Thanks for visiting and commenting, always appreciate feedback.

  32. @Anonymous I see you had a lot to get off your chest haha. I have very mixed and tbqh not very well-defined views on this whole culture. I mean, I was once guilty of making LJers friend me for Nabari text translations; now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I did that! What I do know for sure is that it's not fair to downtrod and bully the 'fans' of scangroups for emotional compensation, which has unfortunately become the immediate response. Scanlators are not gods, but when threatened with a loss of scanlations, people learn to treat them like one.

It would be ideal if there was a decrease in LJ and forum scangroups, as the nature of those sites breed exclusivity and privacy. It is bizarre how different/sectioned off the BL community is. I think it is reasonable to police scans a bit when there's shota, or the mangaka/doujinka openly disapprove of them, but that is does not really apply to most officially published BL.

I personally HATE the 'learn Japanese' thing. I myself am far from fluent despite learning it for five years. It is unreasonable to ask someone to learn a whole language (not to mention the costs for textbooks, dictionaries, classes, etc.) for a hobby. I too wish that the BL community experiences a culture shift to open sharing again soon, but I don't have high hopes.

I talked waaaay too much, but you got a bit of my opinion. Thank you for yours, far from offending me, I think blunt honesty is needed (if worded to be constructive, not mean) :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Lacy i totally agree Lacy!

Thanks so much for your hard work, it's truly appreciated.

What really upsets me though, about the exclusivity of this culture, is how some scanlation moderators on LJ (I won't cite who) will actually join and narrowly monitor other LJ communities to make sure no "bad words" are spoken of them in comments.

I was actually banned from a particular scanlation community because I noted something very similar to what you and the other anon poster commented, about the problems of exclusive scanlation groups. It wasn't malicious at all, but any criticism voiced apparently is a verbal assault on the scanlators, according to so-and-so group's logic.

Given that, I really just think the whole trend/culture with bl scans is getting worse, not better tbh.

    Anyway, thanks again!

  34. i only check kishaclub for the updates.. i'm mostly just playing fb half of the day and sleeping... and i don't have time to upload stuff which i dl from any group. not to worry, coz your scans are safe with me since i just read and delete them on my comp when i finish. thanks :)

  35. Hey, don't give me such a scare! I've seen it happening so many times lately and suffered it, as many of us, that I'm not sure at my age I could resist it.

Thank you for being so courageous and generous! Love your point of view.

  36. Dear Lacy,

Thank you for sharing the love!

  37. i am really angry about it. i could not think why people do this against themselves. you are doing great work here, and they ruin it! i follow your sites through Kisha and happy to see whenever you appear there. hope you will be well and fully understand how you feel.
just this comment-system here is not always let me in:( so must comment as anonymous:(

  38. You are the hero that BL scanlation deserves :')

Thanks for the release and keep up the good work!

  39. So I'm totally joining in on the fangirling of your open policy and take on the hoop jumping. Thank you so so much. I get it and understand it and have done it at too many groups to count, but I'm pretty sure I inadvertently picked up an account at mangafox 'cause I just didn't have the time for 100 posts at a forum with only 3 topics.

  43. @Anonymous Eep yeah my css is kinda whack but I'm waiting for a blogger update to put official threaded comments in soz lol.

  44. @Spoons "Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight."

You just reminded me of it, haha. Thanks!

  45. @story645 Aw, thanks for the support. While I understand the mindset of ~security~, I've experienced it and I don't want people eventually standing on their heads balancing knives on their toes while whistling me a song. Who has the time?? (knife balancing takes practice.) We have lives outside of yaoi here, sort of.

I'm glad I came here and read this, you seem like a really good intentioned person and also reasonable and pretty kind. ^^
Thanks a lot for your work and patience!
Those comments made me think a little about that kind of problem and I agree with both of you in many ways if not completely.
This kind of mutual respect makes all the diference.
About the update problem, while reading the comments, it made me remenber when I got to find scanlations of a bl that stoped being updated ages ago and I was wondering why MU hasn't updated it. Pretty naive of me, now I know why.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @nie That's very flattering of you, thanks for the support and coming by.

I think that this has been quite an opinionated post, which is a good thing. It's so important for discussion to occur and respect to be maintained on both sides of the scanlation scene, and it's great if this has got you to be more aware and thinking about the issues.

Yup, there are quite a lot of hidden groups, keep a watch on kisha club or yuuri21 to keep on top of things.
